Bicheno has been named the number one town in Australia by Australian Traveller, topping the publication’s 2026 list of the ‘100 Best Towns in Australia to Travel To’.
The result places one of Tasmania’s most loved East Coast towns at the centre of national attention. Known for its beaches, coastal walks, wildlife, local food and relaxed pace, Bicheno has long held strong appeal for Tasmanians and visitors. This latest recognition reinforces its position as one of the country’s most memorable regional destinations.
Top 10, out of the Top 100 list:
1. Bicheno, Tas
2. Port Douglas, Qld
3. Byron Bay, NSW
4. Port Fairy, Vic
5. Bowral, NSW
6. Broome, WA
7. Willunga, SA
8. Eagle Bay, WA
9. Noosa, Qld
10. Beechworth, Vic
The announcement was also a strong result for Tasmania more broadly, with ten Tasmanian towns included in the national top 100. Alongside Bicheno at number one, St Helens was ranked 13th, Stanley 17th, Richmond 18th, Launceston 26th, New Norfolk 36th, Bridport 39th, Evandale 53rd, Strahan 85th and Sheffield 86th.
Together, the results reflect the breadth of Tasmania’s appeal, from East Coast beach towns and historic villages to established regional centres and remote west coast destinations. They also show the strength of smaller Tasmanian communities in a national travel market increasingly drawn to places with character, landscape and a clear sense of identity.
For Bicheno, the win feels particularly fitting. The town sits within easy reach of some of the East Coast’s most recognised natural attractions, while retaining the simplicity and local character that have made it a longstanding favourite. Its beaches, blowhole, wildlife experiences, nearby Diamond Island and access to coastal reserves all contribute to a visitor experience closely connected to place.
Being named Australia’s best town to visit is a significant moment for Bicheno, and a well-deserved acknowledgement of a town that continues to represent so much of what makes Tasmania distinctive.
